A long history with celerities in sucession

Jiangmen is located at the convergence of the West River and the Pengjiang River and the latter being a tributary of the former. It derived its name from the two hills Penglai and Yandun, which used to stand on opposite sides of the Pengjiang River. By the early Ming era, Jiangmen had already become an important commercial town and meeting place for mer-chants. In 1904, the Jiangmen Customs House was established at Beijie, enabling the city to become an important coastal foreign trade port of China. In 1925 and 1951, it twice became a provincially- administered city. In 1983, Jiangmen was established as a prefecture-level mu-nicipality with several counties under its jurisdiction.

Jiangmen at present has jurisdiction over the three districts of Pengjiang, Jianghai, and Xinhui, as well as the four county- level cities of Taishan, Kaiping, Heshan, and Enping. The whole region is popularly known as Wuyi, meaning“five cities.”In this beautiful land, celebrities emerge in large number, It is the native land of many renowned historical figures, such as Chen Baisha, the great Ming Dynasty Confucian scholar; Liang Qichao, China’s modern reform pioneer; and Chen Shaobai, China’s“National Uncle”. As a famous“hometown of performing stars”, it also gives birth to more than 100 well- known performing stars, including Li Minwei,“Father of Chinese Films”, the first person of Hong Kong films; Hu Die, the first queen of Chinese films; Dai Ailian, Mother of Chinese dance;Hung Sin- nui, Cantonese opera master; and internationally renowned superstars Zhou Runfa, Liu Dehua, Liang Chaowei, Zhen Zidan, etc.

★Pengjiang District

Pengjiang district is the political, economic and cultural center of our and has a land area of 321.97 km and a registered resident population of about 853,000 by 2020.

★Jianghai District

Jianghai District is situated in the southeastern region of Jiangmen with a land area of 109.16 km and a registered resident population of about 364,700 by 2020.

★Xinhui District

Xinhui District is located in the southwestern region of Jiangmen. As a famous cultural city in Guangdong and during the Sui and Tang Dynasties, it was called Gangzhou. In 1992, its status was changed from county to city, and in 2002, it became a district of Jiangmen. It has a land area of 1354.71 km and a registered resident population of 909,300 by 2020.

★Taishan City

Taishan was originally called Xin-Ning County and was first established in 1499 (the twelfth year of the Hongzhi Reign period of the Ming Dynasty). In 1914, it was renamed Taishan County, and in 1992, it was elevated to a city. It has a land area of 3287.8 km and a registered resident population of 907,700 by 2020 .

★Kaiping City

Kaiping was first established as a county in 1649 (the sixth year of the Shunzhi Reign period of the Qing Dynasty), and in 1993, its status was changed to city. It has a land area of 1656.94 km and a registered resident population of 748,800 by 2020.

★Heshan City

Heshan was first established as a county in 1732 (the tenth year of the Yongzheng Reign period of the Qing Dynasty), and in 1958, it was combined with Gaoming Country to form Gaohe County. In 1981, it was separated from Gaoming and became Heshan County again. In 1993, it was granted the status of a city. It now has a land area of 1082.73 km and a registered resident population of 531,000 by 2020.

★Enping City

Enping was first established as a county in 220 (the 25th year of the Jianan Reign period of the Eastern Han Dynasty).In 1958, Kaiping county was called Kaien County,and in 1961, it was called Enping county again, which was elevated from county to city in 1994. It has a land area of 1693.6km and a registered resident population of 483,900 by 2020.
