Oriental White Stork appears in Jiangmen

"This is the first time we have observed the figure of Oriental White Stork in Jiangmen Area. It's very rare!" From March 17 to 18, birdwatchers saw the Oriental White Stork, a national first-class protected animal and known as the "national treasure of the bird world", in Xinhui yinhuwan Wetland Park for two consecutive days. "The wintering places of Oriental White Stork are mainly concentrated in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, such as Poyang Lake. Now that the migratory bird has returned to the north, it has come to Jiangmen to stay, giving us the opportunity to take close-up photos." Lei Lei, a bird watcher, said.

From the photos taken by Lei Lei, the reporter saw that the Oriental White Stork has a long and thick mouth, vermilion around its eyes and throat, white feathers on its body, and gradually turns black after transition to its wings. A pair of bright red legs are very slender and beautiful when standing. "In recent years, we have recorded more and more different species of birds in Jiangmen, including rare birds, which also reflects the good ecological environment of Jiangmen." Lei Lei said.

The reporter learned from the Municipal Bureau of natural resources that Jiangmen's rich forest, wetland and water resources are an important reason why birds choose to live and overwinter here. At present, our city has 429200 hectares of forests and 174627.3 hectares of wetlands and water areas, nearly 22% of the total area of waters and wetlands in the Pearl River Delta. "In addition to the famous bird paradise, our city also has a large number of migratory bird habitats and bird watching resorts, such as Kaiping peacock Lake National Wetland Park, Taishan Town Bay Mangrove Wetland Park, Heshan gulaoshui Township Wetland Park, etc. from November to April of the next year, a large number of migratory birds will go to Jiangmen to avoid the cold and winter." The relevant person in charge of the Bureau said that with the continuous improvement of the natural environment, more and more birds came to our city to "visit" and settle down. Some unusual birds will not only appear in nature reserves, wetland parks, forest parks and other nature reserves, but also "punch in" at the park in the city center. For example, Dai shengniao, a "rare guest" who appeared in Yuanbaoshan Park earlier this month, and the pelican, a national class II protected animal that once stayed on the Waihai bridge. In 2019, Shazi Island, Sanjiang Town, Xinhui District even attracted 9 national first-class protected animals and white cranes evaluated as extremely dangerous species by the World Conservation Union.
